Hi! My name is Sydney Hocker, and I am a master’s level therapist intern completing my degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lamar University. I am supported by both my university supervision and the guidance of my clinical supervisor, Adrienne Marshall, MMFT, LMFT, NACC. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Texas Woman’s University. During my time working with adolescents who stutter, I developed a fascination for the role that self-esteem plays in speech disorders. I have loved following that passion for mental health while pursuing my current journey towards becoming a therapist.

My studies have taught me that any mental health struggles you might be experiencing, whether that be anxiety, depression, couple or family issues, trauma, addiction, etc., are manifested in and reinforced by your relationships with others. In a natural symmetry, I also believe our struggles are solved and improved through our most meaningful relationships. By providing a supportive, secure, and healing therapeutic relationship, I hope to create a safe place for you to evaluate whatever challenges you’re facing. As we get to the root of where you feel stuck, we can collaboratively find new ways for you to engage with others and with the world.

I believe connection is the way to healing, and by healing we can also find more joyful and genuine connection. My theoretical orientation to therapy is based on Attachment Theory, and I utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy with individuals, couples, and families in order to create healing connections. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), one of the leading treatments for trauma.

I am happy to meet you wherever you’re at in your journey. Reaching out is the first step, and the rest can fall into place as we, together, look at your ways of being, always with a non-judgmental and compassionate curiosity. I commend you for reaching out for therapy, which can require immense bravery and courage. I would be honored to walk alongside you as you find more congruent ways of living, while embracing the self that you truly love and are proud to be.
